Camping is one of the great Aussie pastimes and here in the Sunraysia area we really are spoiled.
With the Murray and Darling and everything that comes with them there really is no shortage of spots.
We can spend days listing off all of the great spots you can find to pitch a tent but we’ve decided to settle for three of our favourites.
And here they are…
Abbotsford Bridge Reserve
On the Victorian side of the river you’ll find this spot. Dogs are alright and you can really soak up the riverside atmosphere.
The best thing about it is it’s not too remote and relatively easy to access. As usual that black mud can cause issues if it gets wet but, even if you do manage to get stuck, at least you’re not stranded in the middle of nowhere.
Horseshoe Bend/Merbein Common
About 10 kilometres from Merbein this bush camp site is nice and easy to find. Just hop off the Old Wentworth Road and you’ll find a bunch of bush campsites tent-ready.
It’s free, dogs are permitted and swimming, fishing and boating are all at your fingertips. It’s got that great bush feel and it’s just outside of a settled area.
Bottle Bend campground
Another riverside freebie, there are about 20 campsites here nestled amongst the grand old gum trees. The facilities aren’t top notch but who needs mod-cons for camping anyway?
You can feel free to bring the dogs, there’s plenty of birdlife to gaze at and you’ll have plenty of space to enjoy swimming and fishing while you’re there.
